I would suggest sticking with LTS versions of Ubuntu. 8.04 was an LTS
and the next one is 10.04. There is a live cd with Trinity that works
well. You can upgrade Trinity to 3.5.13 and it should stay stable.

There is currently no stable version for the latest LTS Ubuntu (12.04).
