Hello again.
I have managed to install my desktop environment,
alongside with
KDE4
and GNOME 3. Most of the desktop environment seems
to work okay,
except
for two major issues.
1. There is no shutdown option in the menu, despite
the option to
provide shutdown options is enabled in the settings.
2. Upon highlighting the System and Preferences
menus, the panel
seems
to crash. After a first crash, it restarts. But
after a second
crash,
the panel does not seem to load anymore unless I re
log.
Are you using Kicker or Kickoff?

Hmmm... I don't know. I think it is Kicker. It's the
Windows-like
menu.
Yes, that sounds like Kicker.
I have not seen this behaviour before. It is possible
that you are
seeing
some kind of interaction between KDE4 and TDE, but I am
not sure.
What is the name and version of the Linux distribution you
are
running TDE
on?
Thanks!

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric.
The rest of the menus seem to open without any problem. It
is only the
"Preferences" and "System" ones that cause the panel to
crash. I tried
to switch to Kickoff. It has a more KDE 4 like-appearance,
but does
not seem to work at all (completely empty).
Well, on a second thought, Kickoff seems to work just fine,
even with
those menus. But I keep having problem with Kicker itself. I
guess I
will stick with Kickoff for now.
Before you switch, can you install the tdebase-trinity-dbg
package and
generate a backtrace for us? That way we can look into the
cause of the
problem you are experiencing.
Thanks!

Okay, I will do that. But how can I generate the backtrace?
I'm sorry for the noob question. I have never done that before.
Also, I cannot see any Shutdown option. Although I know it might
be something that has to do with the display manager (I use GDM),
KDE 4 has Shutdown and Restart options.

Hello all,
I'd like to add my input on this one. I don't think it's related to
KDE4 whatsoever because I too experienced exactly the same problem
on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric and mine was 100% clean Ubuntu Unity only
installation. No other desktop environments.
Here are the steps I took (step by step)
1. Installed Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric from a Live USB flash drive that I
created myself with GRUB4DOS and I had selected "download latest
updates option" before the install
2. Installed latest nVidia divers via jockey-gtk and rebooted
3. Setup my twin view display via nvidia-settings dialog
4. I added these lines to my /etc/apt/sources.list file
- deb http://ppa.quick
...etc (as per the
instructions on the site for the Oneiric section)
5. I added the GPG signing key followed by sudo apt-get update and
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings-trinity
kubuntu-desktop-trinity
I restarted Ubuntu and logged into Trinity and as soon as hovered
over System Settings kicker kept crashing without a miss
consistently. I'd open up a terminal and type "kicker" and it would
start again until I hover over "System Settings" again. Typing text
in the search box was also crashing Kicker. As far as the type of
menu I was using, it was the Classic one. There is an option to
switch between the Classic and the more KDE4-like one. I was using
the classic one. I am now back on TDE 3.15.12 on kubuntu 10.10 (the
one downloadable from TDE site). I imaged my partition this time
with a good install as I always seem to break things but hey that's
how one learns! If Alejandro is having trouble producing the log, I
am willing to install Ubuntu again and download KDE again (it takes
well over an hour despite the fact I am on cable, servers must be
slow) and do whatever it is necessary to get to the bottom of this
but if Alejandro knows how to get these logs, then please go ahead
Alejandro, just provide clear instructions to him. It would save me
hours :)
