that pop-up usually happens when it's invoked to run as root, as you possibly know, 
you can chown net_applet itself by opening a konsole, su to root and issue 
chown yourusername:yourusername /usr/bin/net_applet and that will change the ownership, after that 
right click the menu button and edit the menu and navigate to the entry and if need be edit that to point to /usr/bin/net_applet

Hope all is well there with you and yours.

"sorry I didn't read this earlier" not to worry. All good things in time.

I think the problem might have something to do with the authenticate app (see
image). Almost everything that uses this doesn't work. Where I can, I just
use tde's.

I hope there's a clue in there that sparks something.

Take your time, until there's an answer, I can run it using tde's root
password thingy.
