All the years I have had/used kde 3.5..., I never knew this.  So simple.  This is a perfect example of the beauty of keeping kde 3.5. going.

That happened to me when I did a configure desktop by right-clicking
on the desktop.

When I got to the desktop configuration through the main menu, system,
configuration manager, I was able to toggle "desktop device icons" off
and then back on again, and that made automount work again.
