If you go to KDE Components => File Manager, tab Behaviour, do you see 'Show
File Tips', 'Show previews in file tips' check boxes?  If so, that should do
what you want.
        WRT swapping pcman for Konqueror, right-click on the Konqueror desktop or
menu bar icon, select Configure button, to the Application tab, and change
the Command field to call the program you want.  (This still might not get
all of the features you want, but it will be more consistent than renaming
the program.)
