Your friend could try to select the area where the text is supposed to be, and copy to clipboard, then paste into a plain text editor.  It's possible that rather than the text going away, it (or the background) got switched so text and background are same color.  Black-on-black  used to be a frequent problem with KDE version 1 in 1990's RedHat releases, when you tried to set up a dark theme.

No, seriously, it is really time for a new release of my LiveCD. It is really really near release and it uses TDE packages builds against the new PCLinuxOS 2014 libs, which will be much better because as of now, it might not be a good idea to update the remaster from last summer.

I am updating regularly, only because I want to find out when it will break.
So far it seems to go well, except for Wine, which got a deadly disease :-)
and firefox which got slow ( as mentioned in a previous post ) is now a feature :-)
But from a technical point, I am very interested to know how the text could disappear.
Never have seen that, in any distro !
