* Are any special build configuration options required?
Don't think so, only if you provide to the end user the ability to tweak build-time options for himself, like on gentoo.
Anyway the set of affected options are: 
 - WITH_XINNERAMA
 - WITH_XRANDR
 - WITH_OPENGL
 - WITH_LIBCONFIG (dunno, how it would affect the usability if turned off)
 - WITH_PCRE (ON by default) 

* Are any usability tests required or is this only a build test?
Some composition-related, if you wish, but the patches shouldn't affect the usability.
