It's funny, I can log into Cinnamon and the files are still there. 

So its come down to either:

1. Nuke the OS, nuke the partition and set the partition back up under TDE

2. same as above, but not set up a partition ( Makes downloading dropbox files a pain ) 

3. Or give up trying to use TDE.
