This should be
a system configuration problem. From

I suspect that your user also needs to be in a group for
removable media to be able to eject USB drives.

No problems as non-root in Xfce 4.10 and KDE 4.8.5. I never had problems
before and group assignments are the same.
pmount, pumount, pmount-hal are installed 750 suid.

Ah, OK. Could be another eject bug then.
I wonder if I need to add rudimentary eject hooks for udisks2 to the TDEHW
library due to the plurality of bugs and problems in the HAL-less eject
command, though this would not be for some time into the future as I have
more pressing matters to deal with.
