You say only 512 MB of RAM. I'm curious what system services are running or what the
system is like when running several apps.

As I type this (web browser, mail client, IRC, and a PDF open) 300MB of
RAM is used in total, and the system is snappy and responsive. Firing up
an Akonadi-using application increases RAM usage to about 380MB. All the
typical services/daemons (NetworkManager, HAL, udev, etc.) are running,
just no Nepomuk/Strigi, and no KWin compositor.
