Doesn't matter what was lost. :-) TDE is DEAD without automounting. I don't envision any user tolerating that loss of functionality. "Long time" won't cut the cheese with most users --- they'll move on.
Did the OpenSuse KDE3 people resolve this problem?
I think OpenSuse use my udisks2 backend.

Anyway, it still need some improvements (i.e. better integration with polkit, support for cameras, etc). My polkit agent is almost ready, but it will need Qt3 patched to support glib mainloop (which was developed few years ago by Norbert Frese).

At this moment I run my KDE3 on top of patched Qt, without any problem.
Can you send in a patch for consideration? If it looks sane we may very well include it in our next Qt release (3.5.0).
