Probably a good idea; I don't have the time at the moment to pursue it further but if you come up with a reliable method for doing this I would be willing to look at it and commit it to SVN.

I don't know of a way to merge those checks into svn. Currently I am writing some basic checks in my build scripts and I will continue expanding those checks as I learn more. Perhaps eventually those checks can be merged into svn so as to help any person with any distro.
