And yes, I am fully aware of the internals of TDE and the fact that WMs
can be autodetected with the .desktop files. I mentioned the end effect
(the user can choose which WM executable to use) to be precise.

Unfortunately .desktop files won't work for all WM's. I think it would be
simpler to just have a command line option. this also makes it easy to use
certain flags for your WM
*sigh* it *has* to be .desktop files as that's how
the code to start another
window manager works. And yes each window manager can be started with a
.desktop file. If not the window manager is so broken that you cannot use it
for TDE anyway.
