Okay. I bumped automake and autoconf to the same versions used in Slackware 12.2. I rebuilt the packages rather than just install from an older system.
Failed at about the same place with almost the same message.
Is 3.5.12 dead in the water?

On newer systems, yes unfortunately. However, it sounds like you may have the old Autoconf/Automake versions somewhere on your system, as downgrading the entire Autoconf/Automake system *should* allow Trinity 3.5.12 to build.
