Try something
simple, like this:

Change the 1/2 "A" to a full lower case "a" and add the
respective sub/super script. No arrows, no cursor icon.

Don't use "x" as the base character. I copied the image from a well-known
proprietary app.
I like the idea of using a different color for the sub/super script character. The green
that is used in the "check mark" for the spell check button might be a good
choice that will blend with the basic toolbar color scheme.
