see why enabling HAL would have such an  effect. Any ideas?

 There should be no effect whatsoever.  Not meaning to
 offend, but I would
 make sure that both patches were actually applied to the
 source prior to
 building. ;-) 
No offense. Yes they are both applied. I checked that before posting. :)
