While they are original, they are in fact handled by kompmgr. :-) There
are also non-composited shadows that originally came with KDE 3.5.10 as
well, and those are glitchy.
This is screenshot from KDE3, not from Trinity, and it shows the only
shadows
that present in the original KDE3.
Attached is a screenshot from TDE 3.5.13, showing the exact same control
module that you showed in your screenshot of KDE 3.5.10.
There are checkboxes on that page that control shadows being shown on move
and resize.
It is quite possible that there is a problem with the control module,
probably due to the extensive changes to kompmgr in order to stabilize it,
but the general code and control modules remain intact from KDE 3.5.10.
