With kdbus-notification not installed, what causes TDE notification popups?

TDE has internal support via the KNotify class. kdbus-notification simply intercepts notifications from DBUS-enabled applications (i.e. non-TDE programs such as Firefox) and uses the KNotify class to display the popup in a manner more familiar to TDE users.
