Wow i think i screwed something up, 1.11.1 is what fedora ships with, i had
that same problem and thought i solved it by downgrading, now i m not so
sure.

On fedora 13 i was able to get this to work by
downgrading to automake
1.11.1, it may be worth packaging an older supported version of automake
if
packages are not already provided with these
newer distros, until the
CMake
build system stabilizes in a future version.

Are you using the CMake build system? The Automake version has a known
problem with generating the final library files.
