Wow i think i screwed something up, 1.11.1 is what fedora ships with, i had
that same problem and thought i solved it by downgrading, now i m not so
sure.

Are you using the CMake build system? The Automake version has a known
problem with generating the final library files.

how did you get it to work with automake 1.11.1? openSUSE is still
using that version and it's not going anywhere.
