Hi,
I have ubuntu 18.4 with trinity R14.0.5. If I want to start the arduino ide from arduino.cc (download and extract arduino-1.8.7-linux64.tar.xz) there comes the splash-screen for one second and it crashes with this message:
~/arduino-1.8.7$ ./arduino Picked up JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS: TQSettings::sync: failed to open '/etc/tqt3/tqt_plugins_3.5rc.tmp' for writing
What I have to install or change? Thank you very much for the great Desktop.

Hi, I am not using this package, but the message above most likely does not have to do with your problem.
Have a look at that
~/arduino-1.8.7$ ./arduino Picked up JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS:
to me it looks like it is java app, so look in this direction - perhaps you need to set tha java path or class path or similar.
regards
Hi,
Thanks for the answer. You are right, it is a java program. But the arduino IDE works in a vanilla ubuntu 18.4 in VirtualBox. So I think it is a TDE problem.
Best regards

Hi!
I have 14.0.6~pre + openjdk-8-jre-headless + arduino 1.8.3. I remember that I once saw the error you described, but that's been quite a while. You might try "chown a+w /etc/tqt3/" as a last resort :-/

Hi too!
do you mean "chown" or "chmod"? I read the manpage first, on chown is no a+x.

but this has nothing to do with OPs problem and it is a bad idea to give permission to everybody to write in /etc (you mean chmod o+w).

I don't know about the logical implications you are applying to come to this conclusion, but I would look in the script ./arduino (because it must be a script that sets up the environment to run the java application below).
Those scripts usually check java version and/or set JAVA_PATH and CLASS_PATH, so look in this direction.
Try following in konsole bash --login ./arduino
Last but not least, don't post in the devel list but move this conversation to the user list.

Hi,
I just started my computer and logged in with the ubuntu standard desktop. The arduino ide works there without problems. Back to TDE and arduino ide dont start. So I think it is a TDE problem.
I move to the users list.
