Dear all, in bug 2074 Alex has proposed a new image for the TDE Classic menu sidebar for v14.0.0. Before pushing it to GIT, I would like to hear your thoughts on the new look. Personally I think it's great and more in style with the changes already made to KPersonalizer and the new default splash screen. I have attached a sample image of what a new menu looks like.
Cheers Michele

Looks nice to me. I still miss that "retro" look from the early 2000s, but we can't keep TDE there forever. :-)
I don't think there's a way to customize the sidebar tile from the GUI or with any theme management tools. This is a feature we should probably add at some point.

It looks flat, but then flat is "in" with respect to user interfaces these days. It does represent a noticeable colour shift from the old KDE3 menu strip (from "logo blue" to teal), but that isn't innately wrong either.
So my response is mostly neutral, and I'll go along with everyone else's decision.
If we get hundreds of emails complaining, we can always switch it back.

At first glance, it looks nice. But I have two comments:
1) It seemed to me strange logo 'T' rotated to vertical. At first I wondered if it would be better to leave it unrotated. Then I realized another thing: There is too much icons. Icons on the menu, icon in the new sidebar image, but also the icon on the kicker button from which the menu is opened. All icons are together in one small area.
2) TDE is an acronym Trinity Desktop Environment. Trinity TDE is therefore as Trinity Trinity Desktop Environment. It is a bit odd? But I have no idea how to improve it. Let alone TDE is not good. Give dash between Trinity and TDE - it would probably be too weird. Leave alone Trinity (as is now)?

Yes, I would also suggest plain Trinity or TDE, not both. Good catch Slavek!

Hi everyone!
First of all, thank you for your feedback! If you are interested in having the TDE logo rotated, the text changed or a color that is better matching vintage KDE color set, it is very easy to change in Gimp. So, just let me know what you want and I'll upload the new picture set.
Thank you! -Alexandre

I would have liked:
1) Leave a Trinity itself, without TDE. 2) A three variants of 'T' logo a) unrotated b) unrotated and vertically aligned with the menu icons c) without the 'T' logo
Please, can you create such three proposals?
Thank you

Here is a few propositions. I still prefer the original proposition, but these deserves to be seen too! Tell me what you think!

Hi Alex, thanks for the various files. How about "Trinity DE"? Very similar to the original one, but without the "trinity" repetition. Or another one could be "Trinity Desktop Environment" As for the icon, I think it looks better if aligned with the sidebar text (i.e. rotated). Alternatively we could use no icon. The unrotated logo seems weird to me, because the sidebar text is rotated.
Cheers Michele

Here it is! I personally like the ''Trinity TDE'' version. The full one looks a little over-loaded and ''DE'' alone seem strange. Just an opinion. I prefer the icon rotated too! -Alexandre

Thanks again Alex. I agree that the "DE" alone looks a little awkward. For me, the best one is the full "Trinity Desktop Environment" version, but I am fine with the original "Trinity TDE" or "TDE" as well. Let's see other people's comment as well.
Cheers Michele

I was worried that the use of the whole Trinity Desktop Environment is too long for sidebar, but it looks good! Personally, I prefer the variant with whole Trinity Desktop Environment without logo.
Alexandre, please, can you create next sample - including the preview of menu? Thank you for your effort.
Note: As a variant of the proper name are officially quoted: "Trinity," "Trinity Desktop Environment," or "TDE". I think we should keep these listed options and do not add more.

I think it is still better with the rotated icon. I had to create this sample snapshot with Gimp, because the option to show/hide this side picture doesn't even work on Ubuntu on R14, as much on 13.10 as on 14.04.
I think you have more than enough choices and variants. More than that would be a little ridiculous...

The icon is complicated: + rotated looks strangely + unrotated does not match the text direction + in both cases - there are too many icons on a too small area (this is well shown in http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=2087)
All samples created by Alexandre was added to a bug report 2074: http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2074
In my personal opinion - the sample from the last email (full long name without logo => sample 8) looks best. Your opinions are welcome.
Alexandre, thank you again!

I agree with Slavek, full text no icon seems the best compromise. Cheers Michele

These look fine :-)
I would use the version with the not-rotated logo. Logos are all about recognizability, rotationg does not make that easier.
