Hi all.
I have a suggestion to set default global shortcuts in kmix to XF86AudioRaiseVolume, XF86AudioLowerVolume and XF86AudioMute. With this settings should work immediately keys on multimedia keyboards.
Does anyone have any objections?

Only if you resolve enhancement request 857 at the same time. :-)
What are the proposed new shortcuts?

Update keyboard shortcuts is simple. Recasting icon behaviour requires programming. :'(

Actually is bad idea to bind keys directly in program, use kmixrc instead:
[Global Shortcuts] Decrease volume=XF86AudioLowerVolume Increase volume=XF86AudioRaiseVolume Toggle mute=XF86AudioMute

Kmixrc must set each user manually == impractical, if may be "better" default settings directly in the program. Remember that this setting directly in the program is only the "default" settings - the user can change it in settings.

Not exactly. You can install kmixrc to ${CONFIG_INSTALL_DIR} and that's all.

Well, that's also a possibility. However, the keys in this case is not listed in the settings as "default", but "custom". Personally, I find it handy preset keys in the program as the default. The user in this case has the option in settings to set your own, turn off, but also to return to the default settings.
We'll see what the other views.

The only thing is that on some laptops the mute is hardware and sometimes the "mute/unmute" can be reversed (for example pressing "raise volume" unmute automatically, but kmix is not noticed about this action).
