I have received several requests to implement some type of translation framework in order to make submitting translations to TDE easier (this includes making sure they actually end up in GIT). Apparently the current process is cumbersome and error prone; I can attest to this as we have at least one large translations patch languishing in the bugtracker that cannot be cleanly applied to the current GIT sources.
My question is: what would all you translators like to see out of the translation framework? Are there any existing open-source services that you prefer to use and/or might be usable with TDE? I would also like to know what your preferred workflow is so that I can try to design something to match.

Tim, while investigating bug 1833 about discontinued URL links in kbabel, I gathered some info that could be useful. Apparently, KBabel was the framework used in the KDE 3.5 days for po file translation and has been replaced by Lokalize since KDE 4.1 (see http://l10n.kde.org/tools/). Therefore KBabel should still be applicable to TDE.
What we need is to create/update (and possibly to automate the process) a PO compendium file (a po template .pot) containing all the strings that require translation. From the KBabel handbook:
"A compendium is a file containing a collection of all translation messages (pairs of msgid and msgstr) in a project, for example, in KDE. Typically, compendium for a given language is created by concatenating all PO files of the project for the language. Compendium can contain translated, untranslated and fuzzy messages"
Then users can use KBabel to translate the PO compendium and submit it back to us on the mailing list, so that we can merge the translation to the GIT repo.

OK, sounds reasonable enough. However, I am *completely* translations illiterate. :-) How would I go about generating this compendium, and would I just make it available on the servers or should it go into GIT?

I am probably as illiterate as you when it comes to translation. Anyhow here: http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/l10n-kde4/templates/messages/kdelibs/kdelibs4.po... you can see an example of what a .pot file looks like (it is for kde4, but you can open it in Kbabel even if it complains about the header format). My guess is that it is a concatenation of the different po files available. The attached screenshot shows an example, the red rectangle shows a translated string.
The main thing though is that .po files are not fully updated to the current sources, so we need one or more volunteers to do the update job :) This does not require programming skills, so even simple users can contribute to it.
