Hello to all,
I'm submitting my entry for the mascot contest (maybe a little early). It was designed with Inkscape 0.92.5. The source (vector) files are included in the archive.
I proposed earlier (in regard with the winner mascot) that a differently inspired variant be used for the about dialog in every release. Thus, I included 2 variants inspired from science fiction (the Hitchhiker's trilogy and the dreaded Trinitator ;-) ).
I'm open for comments/suggestions.

Sooo cute. I like the first two images but the one with the gun not so much (perhaps a motorbike instead?).
He reminds me a of a Christmas bear.

So, let me elaborate a bit on why I chose to propose a polar bear as a fitting mascot:
=== Five Reasons For Tristian ===
1. A white (polar) bear fits nicely with the predominantly cold blue colours of Trinity (which we mostly inherited from KDE 3.x);
2. A friendly-looking mascot with a simplistic/comic style (not abnormal flatness or geometrical abstraction which dominate contemporary Plasma et al.) looks welcome and thus effective for newcomers;
3. A bear is quite anthropomorhic and thus we can come up with more interesting designs with the bear doing something like a human would;
4. A polar bear can be both qt and strong (pun intended ;-);
5. Tristian's name reminds one of the project's name (Trinity Desktop).
Also, I can't think of another project using this animal as their mascot, so, as an extra, no legal issues.

I am missing the relation to the Konqi or may be Kandalf
https://handwiki.org/wiki/Konqi
As TDE is a continuation of KDE3, IMO it should be somehow reflected Also I do not like the bear. Sorry :)

The whole point to have our own mascot is exactly to highlight the TDE is not KDE 3.5. Yes, the project was forked from KDE 3.5, but TDE is now an independent project :-)

Hi, this as reply to you and Hunter Ellett
You know things grow and develop, so presumably Kandalf dies, because he was too old. The Konqi grew up and reincarnated in something that is now called Tonqi. So the only thing that it is grown up must be reflected, but I am not very good in painting :)

I've thought of an update as "Tonqi" before, but the name doesn't really make sense. Konqi presumably comes from Konqueror, so we'd need... Tonqueror? Then it starts to lose its meaning.
I'd like to make a character using Blender, since I'm a big fan of the 3D SGI promotional art in a lot of the menus of TDE. :) I think this kind of art you don't see these days separates us from a lot of projects.

It is matter of POV. If you look at English or other languages how they developed through the ages. Most of the words do not have anything to do with the originals. Take as an example "og" and "eye".

I am fan of pragmatics and economy, so whatever is the shortest way to reach the goal. In fact vector graphics is pretty good and also I have a 2D screen. So IMO 3D is overkill, but if you feel like spending time with it, it is not my business.

3D printed mascot :)

yes this would be a good reason, but looks like first one should agree on the mascot :) draw it in 2D and then draw it in 3D :)
But if it is not the bear I could even imagine buying one. I remember when I bought the linux penguin (in a book store in the Gumpendorferstr.) the store owner asked me how I found it :) It wasn't easy

I agree, but I think having a mascot that is still used by KDE to this day (albeit in a horrendous form) can be confusing. Originally, I thought old Konqi separated us enough considering the drastic difference between 3 Konqi and Plasma Konqi. But the name implies we're no different.
To be honest, I think modifying Konqi in this form to fit Trinity branding would work but I don't know the licensing status of old Konqi. Alternatively, as I hope to do for this contest, is to make a character that fits a lot of the early 3D artwork for KDE/TDE that can fill Konqi's shoes.

Nice, very Christmas-y. Mine might take much longer to do in Blender by the end of November, but challenge accepted. :-)
Nice, very Christmas-y.
Why does everyone seem to think of Christmas? Maybe the big blue globe in the Hitchhikers variant is to blame... Hadn't thought about that.

Blender? So, a truly 3D one? Looking forward to see your entry :-). I'm no good in the 3D part of Blender (but I find it to be the best video editor I ever used).
challenge accepted.
That's the spirit ;-)

Just being a polar bear and the scarf really, but it makes sense and wouldn't be a bad mascot.

Me neither, Blender is really daunting to me but I was thinking a 3D mascot would fit really well with TDE. Maybe its because I fear anything two dimensional like.. Dare I say it.. the new Konqi, but maybe its because of all the flat crap I've been exposed to for the past 5 years. But Tristian's appearance feels like the same art style as the skeuomorphic pseudo-3D Crystal icons and I like it.

Hi Philippe,
the second one (the bear) looks great! Maybe we can rework the name? IMO, Tristian is difficult to say, I think something more catchy would be better. I am terrible with names (as well as drawings) so I can only think of "Trin". If someone has a better proposal or you think Tristian is fine, I will be follow along. On second thought, how about simply "Tee"? "Tee, the Trinity Mascot", it's very T-ish :-)
Re the third one, I would stay away from any fire arm, it's a very politically sensitive subject, better don't get into it.
Cheers Michele

It's okay with me. I didn't think Tristian was difficult to say. But another idea is that we could actually keep Tristian as a full name and use Trin or Tee as a short on e.

You're correct and, like somebody already mentioned, a motorbike would certainly look better (a Terminator poster I based this drawing on is to blame).

That sounds like a good idea. Tristian + Tee. Of course, we shall see what others think about it as well :-)

I also agree with Mavridis that Tristian isn't too hard to say (it rhymes with Christian).

So November is over and Philippe's is the only entry for a new mascot. Anyone else want to send in another candidate? Otherwise the choices are: 1. extend the "competition" to the user ML for another month 2. stick with current mascot 3. change to Tristian
Any other ideas?
Cheers Michele
My suggestions:
1) December as a working period for submitting new proposals, resolve this in January. December is a month with numerous holidays in many countries, artists who may be too busy the rest of the year may have more free time this month.
2) Announce on the front page of the TDE website that there is an open call for designs for new project mascot. Enable web form or email to which to send proposals.
3) Announce the call for designs for new project mascot on websites and user mailing lists of artistic free software projects, for example websites and user mailing lists of Blender, Krita, GIMP,...

My requirement is that it somehow attaches to the old KDE and to Trinity ... so it could be a three headed dragon or similar
Tristan and the bear are far away from the connotations I have with the words Trinity and the KDE3 now TDE.
+ The user and dev community can vote for the mascot somehow It would be fully democratic and legit for me even if it is Tristan the Bear

Yes I agree. December is a good time to get calm and dreaming. This could be a good time for other ideas and creativity. It would be great if new graphics could be prepared during January to March so that we can integrate it into upcoming R14.1.0.

Yes, a short website announcement could be good. Or at least email to announcements ML.
I don't know if it makes sense to create a separate mail address or a special web page. The possibilities were considered either sending a mailing to devels ML or creating a page on tde TDE Wiki.
- Announce the call for designs for new project mascot on websites

I have doubt about whether it could be beneficial to send challenges to other communities than that are interested in the development of TDE.

The requirement that the new mascot should be connected with the original KDE mascot does not seem good to me. On the contrary, it seems better if the new mascot will be obviously different, not another dragon variant. Although I like the dragons, I also like bears. I like proposal from Phillipe. And Tristian / Tee seems to me a very beautiful name.
Cheers

In my humble opinion, a web form on the TDE website is the best option. It is an ideal way to organize the submission of proposals, it allows to establish mandatory fields such as real name and email (without being publicly visible) and to accept some minimum legal conditions (basically: that the person declares that it is his original work and has not been transferred to anyone, that this work has not been or is not used as a recognizable image by another initiative, project or organization, and that the person freely and completely gives it to TDE for free and without any condition beyond the cite of the original creator -the name or pseudonym of the author's choice- on the TDE website). (The real name is for legal reasons associated with the minimum legal conditions).
An additional requirement is the format: Source or editable format (Blender .blend, Inkscape .svg, GIMP .xcf,...) must be provided, not only the export to image, because the mascot must be integrated with the logo and other artwork of the project, now and in the future.
- Announce the call for designs for new project mascot on websites

I add (I forgot) Inkscape to the enumeration.
I have doubt about whether it could be beneficial to send challenges to other communities than that are interested in the development of TDE.
Double benefits:
* It opens the doors of participation to a much larger community. There are many people who have fun drawing with Blender/Inkscape/Krita/GIMP just for leisure and even if they are not TDE users they will be very happy that their leisure creation is useful for a free software project.
* The advertisement itself serves as publicity for the project: it makes the project known to free software users who are not aware of its existence (or who assume that this KDE-3 fork must have died because years later it is not in the Debian repo). There will be people that even if they do not participate with pet drawings, they will be curious about this unknown desktop environment and it is possible that a percentage of people will even be encouraged to use it and/or make some mention or article in their circles.
Although there are people who are very committed to TDE and who do it very well, the small number of people actively involved in its development is a danger to the medium-term survival of TDE. Increasing the number of people is good for TDE. I don't want you to stop being who you are, but more human power in TDE is good. For example, I have reported again in the "new" bug tracker (gitea) the historical quanta bug VPL with the accents in VPL, quanta is the best free HTML editor that exists and it is a pain when I teach HTML learning courses to warn the students to avoid the accents error in VPL, I have clear that fixing this bug pending for many years is due to the lack of people and time to do it but Slavek and company can only thank you for the voluntary work you do to keep this alive.

I suggest not to put additional conditions to the mascot design. Personally if someone submits a nice dragon, it probably will win my heart. But I think every artist should be free to design the mascot they want and the TDE community should be free to choose a mascot other than a dragon. Maybe the new mascot will be a bear, an arctic fox, a parrot or a frog (there are blue parrots and frogs if you care about color) and we will be very happy.
If it's the name, there are already legendary dragons like the (Babylonian) Tiamat and the (Chinese) Tianlong, which we can affectionately call Ti ;)
