It seems like the sources for the KDE 3 artwork featuring Konqi are lost or really hard to find. I wouldn't mind rendering some new artwork featuring our mascot with a T instead of a K on his scarf in Blender but I'm not sure about the licensing status of it or where to find the model. Any ideas? Thanks.
It would be nice to have new artwork for the mascot, but IMO what we really need is something a little more radical. As Trinity is in fact, not KDE, so the mascot has to be somewhat different. We could just take on another dragon mascot with an original design and some other name. Thus, no licensing issues would arise. My point here: Konqi is nice, but it's KDE. We need something our own.
I have long pondered the idea of some kind of a mascot contest. The mascot is, in some part, the emotional soul of the project, and keeping the old version of another project's mascot around is not a good sign.
There seemed to be some sort of proposal for such a contest several years ago, but the discussion stalled. I'd like to take the chance of proposing this again, in the form of a community artwork contest (which could take place on the Wiki). It's a simple proposal, but it would be a big leap forward in terms of project distinction IMO.

Ok, as there's a "T" in the name, the mascot sould definitly be Arnold aka Terminator :)
Nik
I don't know the legal implications of *that* but then we could call it the Trinitator. ;-)

I like it.. Maybe a robot called the Trinitator.. LOL
Borrowing ideas from science fiction is a nice idea, though I'm not sure of the legal implications. Taking an animal as a base is a proven method of creating a mascot.
But whatever the mascot, we could draw a new graphic from time to time (e.g. between releases). For example, we could draw the mascot in different themes (e.g. paying homage to a different book/film each time). It's not totally unlike what OpenBSD is doing each release (except the song part ;-).
Of course we can be dreamig about it all but whether we will actually be able to do something with the mascot depends on whether the majority agrees to carry out such a contest (or some other way of mascot selection).
Discussing the mascot before having seen actual proposals didn't work out the last time. So a contest would probably be a better medium for decision?

We should definitely get something put together to do this.

Indeed having our own mascot and differentiate ourselves from KDE would be great. And I would say that it is probably time we do something about it! :-)
Long ago there was a discussion about it and Bill proposed the "T.Rex", which seems to fit well with both: - having a T in the name - resembling a dragon (kind-of of course, it's a dinosaur) See post here : http://mail.trinitydesktop.org/mailman3/hyperkitty/list/users@trinitydesktop...
We didn't do anything at the time, but I find it a good idea. What does everyone think?
If someone wants to put forward an actual proposal for it, we can review and discuss together. I can eat hex dump files for breakfast, but I am terrible at drawing, so I won't definitely be proposing anything from my side :-)
Cheers Michele

I propose on a community mascot contest, for the following reasons:
a) A community contest is common practice for such a decision;
b) It will give time for the interested community members to present their own view of a mascot they consider appropriate;
c) Deciding on a mascot will be easier once we get to see real submissions with original ideas;
d) This contest can potentially attract attention to the Trinity project;
e) We can decide on the best entry by voting through the mailing list;
f) It can potentially make the community feel closer to the project;
g) It can be well structured and organised.
We would set some rules for the contest (original work, allowed licences, etc.). Submissions would be showcased on a special Wiki page and voting would be organised on a mailing list. Eveybody would be allowed to submit up to 3 proposals, each one with one image just showing the mascot and up to 3 others like little demos of the mascot in different interpretations/contexts.
A fixed deadline would be set for the submissions, and another one for voting. Votes would be recorded on the contest wiki page. The submission with most votes would become the mascot. In the unlikely case of there being more than one winners, the decision could be left to the team. A discussion could then take on about the winner submission, what ought to be improved and such details.
So, what do you think of this? Constructive criticism is welcome ;-)
(BTW we could also have a wallpaper contest)

P.S. Even though my drawing skills are average, I'd be happy to propose a mascot on the contest.

Sounds good to me. Let's bring up the proposals!!!! :-) End of November for proposal submission is good? You can send them to the ML and I can upload them on the wiki. Cheers Michele

Sounds like anachronistic waste of time. TDE is about efficient use of computers, not pets or sports teams.

I don't see how this hinders the progress of TDE at all. There's something charming about having a mascot and it's good to distance ourselves from KDE (heck, nothing about it resembles what TDE is about).

I agree since MATE did the same thing but I thought having the old three-dimensional Konqi that's no longer used in KDE artwork is enough of a distinction. Its entirely subjective but I really don't think a 2D mascot fits the project.
Now you have me thinking what would a good mascot be that isn't Konqi..
I thought having the old three-dimensional Konqi that's no longer used in KDE artwork is enough of a distinction
Well, I don't think so. It's still Konqi and, what's worse, it connotates with KDE3, meaning no progress, no distinction.
Its entirely subjective but I really don't think a 2D mascot fits the project.
Depends on the design. 2D designs aren't all the same. I agree in that a flat mascot would probably not mix well with the general look of Trinity. But e.g. a 2D-in-a-comics-ish-way mascot? Why not?
That's part of why a contest would be the ideal means of deciding on the mascot: everyone could present their own view of the mascot and then we could all decide on the best.
