Workaround for bad Qt4 performance

Hi all, I was listening in on the last irc meeting and caught an aftermeeting mentioning about bad Qt4 performance. I offered an article and a possible workaround I found recently, in case people are not aware of it, and was asked to bring it to attention to other developers also, so here goes: I'm suffering bad graphical performance in Qt4 and PyQt4 applications and searched for solutions. I found a post on nokia.com [1] that mentions a command line switch that might help. In short: adding "-graphicssystem raster" to my Qt4 applications' command line improved performance drastically for me. There's also a method to set it programmatically, and an environment variable [2]. Testing udisks2 backend and polkit agent

Hello, For anybody who want to test my udisks2 backend and polkit agent, I prepared a live cd based on Fedora 17. The ISO image is a little to big, it needs some cleanup. Experiences installing TDE - some comments for TDE improvements

Hello In order to help improve TDE, I want to tell my experiences with TDE starting from a clean install of Debian Squeeze minimal (within X) from the viewpoint of a Spanish desktop user. The problems, pitfalls or things I've found are improving (I report all as bugs in the bug tracker to be systematic): 1. Trinity Webpage could be translated into several languages without much problem, I think there are collaborators with enough time and desire to make it viable. A call to collaborators through the mailing list to create working groups could be. I offer to help as Spanish-spoken. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1220 2. Debian installation intructions improvements: * Refers to "sudo", but Debian as a "su" distro by default, like most distros. If you're a newbie and follow to the letter the instructions, the lines with "sudo" not work * Lack reference to the translation packages, example "For Spanish translate, apt-get install kde-trinity-i18n-es" * For laptops, kpowersave-trinity is essential, it shoul be indicate in the intructions as "if you have a laptop..." or similar. * A graphical network manager as network-manager-kde-trinity is very util, it shoul be indicate in the intructions as "if you want to have a graphical network manager and you are not using a other as wicd, you..." or similar. May notice about network-manager versions incompatible with network-manager-kde-trinity. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1221 3. Applications of interest: * Kmix should be in the System Tray. I don't report, I think is reported in http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=503 * IMHO k3b-trinity and kima-trinity should be in the default TDE installation, are useful for the general public. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1222 4. Kpersonalizer: * Keramic theme is broken, not see the title bar of the windows or close/maximize /minimize buttons. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1223 * Kpersonalizer is partially in English despite having chosen Spanish. I can help with it. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1225 * Keyboard in English despite having chosen Spanish in Kpersonalizer. I have to do KControl > Keyboard Layout > Enable keyboard layout & Show indicator for single layout. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1224 5. Parts of the system are in English, lack of a complete Spanish translations. For example, "Hibernate computer" and "Suspend computer" in the "End session" window. I can help with it. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1225 6. KDM problems: * KDM don't draw well the background, artifacts can be seen. I think I solved it with KControl > System admin > Login manager > Apparance > Compositor: Trinity compositor. If choosing Trinity Compositor solve the problem, the package should be reconfigured to do it by default. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1226 * "Finish actual session" in "End session" window dialog don't work, just a black screen appears instead of KDM. Doing Ctrl-Alt-F1 & Ctrl-Alt-F6, the KDM window is visible very briefly. I read something similar, related with graphic card (this is a Nvidia, and use the nouveau driver), I don't know. Related: In Exe GNU/Linux, a Debian live CD distro with TDE as desktop environment: * In a live session, if you choose "Change session" in the TDE exit dialog, you find a KDM login window answer you about user name and password - could be auto-restart the TDE desktop * In a HD-installation session, the KDM login window option "Reboot" don't work, the system stays in terminal login (you can insert your user name and password, and the system remains in terminal modex", you can use "startx" :P ) http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1227 Possible related with http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59 and http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419 7. Sudo problems: In a recent mail ( "Clean TDE of Kubuntu references", http://trinity-devel.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::9879 ) I did a review of the problems derivated of the Ubuntu reminiscences dragged by TDE project, as sudo-dependence of TDE nonexistent in the KDE 3.5 original. A set of new sudo-related bugs: * Konsole as SuperUser: T > System > SuperUser > Konsole: a Konsole window appears ask for "[sudo] password for [user]" - it is a Debian (no-sudo) system, therefore neither user password (user is not in /etc/sudoers) neither root password (demand sudo) work. Konqueror as root in the "T > System > SuperUser" dialog works well. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1228 * In T > System, other applications as KPackage open, but for a action ask for "SUDO password", and again neither user password neither root password work. But KUser in T > System work well with root password. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1229 * I installed Synaptic. But Synaptic in T > System don't work to enter the root password. Synaptic via "Run command" answer "KDEInit could not launch 'su-to-root': could not find 'su-to-root' executable". I suggest the following changes in file associations (in Konqueror: Preferences > Configure Konqueror) * Kwrite instead of Kate for plain-text files - I think Kwrite is simpler * Iceweasel instead of Konqueror for HTML files http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1231 Thanks!

New backend for the media:/ kioslave

All, I recently pushed a new (alpha quality) backend for the media:/ kioslave which uses udev/pmount and therefore does not rely on HAL. I encourage developers here to try it out! Please report failures to this list, not to the bugtracker, as it has not been tested much beyond mounting simple flash drives. Encryption support is buggy, but repairing it is my next task. Rhis will NOT be made default for R14.0 due to the vast array of hardware that it still needs to be tested on, but if your distribution no longer works with HAL it may be better than nothing even in this alpha form. To enable it, pass the -DWITH_TDEHWLIB="on" option to tdebase CMake. Enjoy! Tim

Image branding help needed

To the local image wizards: The following files eventually will be renamed to chalk*, but they still need branding work, before or after renaming. /opt/trinity/share/icons/crystalsvg/128x128/mimetypes/krita_kra.png (Deleting the "K" logo will be sufficient) /opt/trinity/share/icons/kdeclassic/48x48/apps/krita.png (Change the K to C?) /opt/trinity/share/icons/kdeclassic/48x48/mimetypes/krita_kra.png (Change the K to C?) /opt/trinity/share/icons/mono/scalable/apps/krita.svgz (Deleting the "K" logo will be sufficient) Thanks! 3.5.13 SRU prerelease preparations

Hey guys, Thanks to the hard work of our excellent team members 3.5.13 SRU is almost ready to be released. Slavek has mentioned a tentative release date of October 1st, which is a week away. So we need: 1. A press release ready and have a list of people we want to send it to. That list has already been compiled. Revert GIT to a specific date

What is the proper way to revert my local GIT repo to a specific date (commit)? I want to modify the sources as they would have looked on a specific day. I've read to run git reset --hard {HEAD} where {HEAD} is the commit to rest. Does that command truly reset the repo? That is does the command only reset indexes and leave the sources intact or are sources modified to that specific commit and all subsequent pulls are deleted? I realize that resetting my local repo will mean a bandwidth hit when I restore everything. :) Darrell

Last patches to 3.5.13.1?

Attention, attention, last call for patches that want to fly with flight number 3.5.13.1. I would as soon froze source code for release 3.5.13.1. Please decide if we should incorporate before freezing any more patches. Definitely will be integrated patch to sets the version number. Commit patches web page

I understand wanting to grab CPU time from the servers to build packages, but the commit patches web page has not been updated in 10 days. We're flying blind. Can we get the page updated? Darrell

TDE running on real ARM hardware!

Some of you might find this interesting...attached is a screenshot of TDE running on actual (physical) ARM hardware! To accomplish this I used Debian Squeeze with TDE running on a Raspberry Pi over tightvnc. I did need to disable artsd due to some kind of ALSA bug on this hardware, but this was a minor inconvenience. Next steps include testing Debian Wheezy and trying to get the built-in graphics hardware running with Xorg. Let me know what you think! Tim
