CLA × DCO

Hi all, with the arrival of the new year, in addition to wishing you good health and well-being, I open another topic for discussion - arrangement between the project and contributors. As with many other open source projects, there were concerns about patent trolls and other potential legal risks that led Tim to propose the use of a CLA (Contributor License Agreement) in 2014. The questions following the CLA's proposal were mainly technical and focused on how to confirm compliance with these arrangements for smaller contributors. The discussion that followed led to a consensus on the fact that it was essential for the contributors to add a "Signed-off-by:" line to their contributions. As a result, the "Signed-off-by" requirement is exactly the same as the one for the DCO (Developer Certificate of Origin). DCO is significantly simpler than a CLA and now used by a lot of open source projects. For these reasons, in recent years we have already been using DCO rather than CLA for all contributions made. We would like to officially declare the CLA obsolete and replace it by a DCO. This would actually officially reconcile the declared state and the way it is actually used. Therefore, I ask you if anyone is aware of any obstacles, why this could not be done? Could you change that to list a single URL please? http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/trinitydesktop.org/trinity/ (you may use https too if you prefer) We're also testing out shorter URLs if this looks better: http://trinitydesktop.mirrorservice.org/trinity/ (https available within the next 10 days) The reason for this request is that these URLs go through our load balancer. This allows us to transparently handle node failure, do patching and maintenance, distribute traffic, etc, without impacting the user visible service. Hi Michael, As discussed we're now mirroring the whole thing so there's no separate "backup" option any more. A key factor in mirroring is to minimize traffic to and from the primary server. Other mirrors use different scripts. I use Debian Buster and Apache2 currently but that may change and other mirrors may use entirely different software. The CPU and RAM will of course depend upon the bandwidth which we have discussed and the software which you choose but in reality it would probably run fine on a twenty year old Pentium with a gig of RAM. In addition to the regular development tool programs in /opt/trinity/bin, I also see numerous tq* programs in /usr/bin, which are installed from the Trinity repository. What are these for? Which should be used for application development? TIA, Leslie

It will be good to have a full mirror (and maybe more than one) of the TDE archive on Slavek machine. Nevertheless (and perhaps my fault for not explaining it well), the point of "moving away from a single person structure" is that we need the archive (and all TDE tools) on public machines accessible from more than one person. Slavek archive/computer is only accessible by him, so it is still a week point, although having a full mirror will improve the current situation. Longer term we need to move all remaining services to public machines, definitely something to discuss again after sorting out the project license and donation status. It would also be good to have at least 2 people who knows what are the required tasks for maintenance of the various services. I do get involved in some of them, but mostly it is Slavek doing the maintenance of the machines, while I focus more on the development side. It would be good if more people steps up and help out Slavek's on the maintenance burden :-) Cheers Michele P.S: perhaps we should discuss on the devels ML rather than users?? so adding devs ML here too

TDE adding MTP support

Hi, looking into how to add MTP some questions arise 1. Why is there the usb.ids file in core/tdebase/kcontrol/usbview/usb.ids Why is the file so outdated - actually has no revision, but compared to /var/lib/usbutils/usb.ids which is part of package usb.ids Why not using the officially maintained usb.ids file? 2. the USB ids are handled in tdelibs and tdebase. Adding MTP as separate tdeio module would impact also these, or is there a better approach? 3. as I understand the TDE library classifies the device based on some string in the usb.ids, but I am not exactly sure how it will classify one device as Camera (PTP) and another as MTP. Can someone elaborate on these questions please?

In a TDM theme's xml file, what does @@@TDEBACKGROUND@@@ point to?

[Resending to Developers because I got no response from Users] I'm trying to write a custom theme file for TDM, using os_enterprise theme as an example. It contains | <greeter> | <item type="pixmap" > | <normal file="@@@TDMBACKGROUND@@@" /> | : to define the login screen's background. I've looked through the various TDE handbooks and poked around on the wiki, but nothing mentions this symbol. (In fact, the only page in the wiki that I found that discusses the internals of theme files seems to be out of date, since it talks about Theme.rc files, whereas the control file in each /opt/trinity/share/apps/tdm/themes subdirectory is an xml file. When the os_enterprise theme is active its display looks like its preview.png, even if the background.png file is different; so what is @@@TDEBACKGROUND@@@ pointing to? Leslie

Malformed URL system:/

That's the popup message I get on various installations. The current instance is 14.0.9 on Buster. It happens when I'm ready to log out. As I've mentioned before and seen nothing to be done about it, right clicking the desktop produces no response. Thus, I must goto the starter in Kicker to click. That produces $SUBJECT on the first click. Once I've disposed of the popup (that makes clicking the starter a no-op), next click of the starter produces expected result. -- Evolution as taught in public schools, like religion, is based on faith, not on science.
