Hello
In order to help improve TDE, I want to tell my experiences with TDE starting from a clean install of Debian Squeeze minimal (within X) from the viewpoint of a Spanish desktop user. The problems, pitfalls or things I've found are improving (I report all as bugs in the bug tracker to be systematic):
1. Trinity Webpage could be translated into several languages without much problem, I think there are collaborators with enough time and desire to make it viable. A call to collaborators through the mailing list to create working groups could be. I offer to help as Spanish-spoken. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1220
2. Debian installation intructions improvements: * Refers to "sudo", but Debian as a "su" distro by default, like most distros. If you're a newbie and follow to the letter the instructions, the lines with "sudo" not work * Lack reference to the translation packages, example "For Spanish translate, apt-get install kde-trinity-i18n-es" * For laptops, kpowersave-trinity is essential, it shoul be indicate in the intructions as "if you have a laptop..." or similar. * A graphical network manager as network-manager-kde-trinity is very util, it shoul be indicate in the intructions as "if you want to have a graphical network manager and you are not using a other as wicd, you..." or similar. May notice about network-manager versions incompatible with network-manager-kde-trinity. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1221
3. Applications of interest: * Kmix should be in the System Tray. I don't report, I think is reported in http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=503 * IMHO k3b-trinity and kima-trinity should be in the default TDE installation, are useful for the general public. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1222
4. Kpersonalizer: * Keramic theme is broken, not see the title bar of the windows or close/maximize /minimize buttons. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1223 * Kpersonalizer is partially in English despite having chosen Spanish. I can help with it. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1225 * Keyboard in English despite having chosen Spanish in Kpersonalizer. I have to do KControl > Keyboard Layout > Enable keyboard layout & Show indicator for single layout. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1224
5. Parts of the system are in English, lack of a complete Spanish translations. For example, "Hibernate computer" and "Suspend computer" in the "End session" window. I can help with it. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1225
6. KDM problems: * KDM don't draw well the background, artifacts can be seen. I think I solved it with KControl > System admin > Login manager > Apparance > Compositor: Trinity compositor. If choosing Trinity Compositor solve the problem, the package should be reconfigured to do it by default. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1226 * "Finish actual session" in "End session" window dialog don't work, just a black screen appears instead of KDM. Doing Ctrl-Alt-F1 & Ctrl-Alt-F6, the KDM window is visible very briefly. I read something similar, related with graphic card (this is a Nvidia, and use the nouveau driver), I don't know. Related: In Exe GNU/Linux, a Debian live CD distro with TDE as desktop environment: * In a live session, if you choose "Change session" in the TDE exit dialog, you find a KDM login window answer you about user name and password - could be auto-restart the TDE desktop * In a HD-installation session, the KDM login window option "Reboot" don't work, the system stays in terminal login (you can insert your user name and password, and the system remains in terminal modex", you can use "startx" :P ) http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1227 Possible related with http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59 and http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419

Sudo problems: In a recent mail ( "Clean TDE of Kubuntu references", http://trinity-devel.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::9879 ) I did a review of the problems derivated of the Ubuntu reminiscences dragged by TDE project, as sudo-dependence of TDE nonexistent in the KDE 3.5 original. A set of new sudo-related bugs: * Konsole as SuperUser: T > System > SuperUser > Konsole: a Konsole window appears ask for "[sudo] password for [user]" - it is a Debian (no-sudo) system, therefore neither user password (user is not in /etc/sudoers) neither root password (demand sudo) work. Konqueror as root in the "T > System > SuperUser" dialog works well. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1228 * In T > System, other applications as KPackage open, but for a action ask for "SUDO password", and again neither user password neither root password work. Thank you for your detailed research. I believe that you will find some of these problems resolved in upcoming release 3.5.13.1. Issues that remain unresolved in 3.5.13.1, we leave to solution later - they will not block release 3.5.13.1.
I am glad for your interest in translations to Spanish. Do you think you managed to get one more volunteer with whom you could revise translations of each other?

Thank you very much for your words and interest for improvement the project. My only intention with this constructive criticism to help improve TDE. I upgrade TDE 3.5.3 to 3.5.13.1 (via repo: deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/slavek-banko/axis/ubuntu squeeze main). Few bugs have been fixed (4a - Keramic theme), others unfortunately remain the same (as all su/sudo bugs: Konsole as SuperUser, Kpackage, Synaptic), and others have appeared (turn-off and restart http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1233 and KDM Ctrl+Alt+Del http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1232 ). Your work with the repo is good, you just have to improve some aspects. I want to help TDE, because I think KDE-3 was the best desktop of all. My contributions are limited to bug-hunter and translator. I like to help with the translation into Spanish... where to start?

Some time ago I sent an email to the Trinity-devel list with my experiences installing TDE in Debian Squeeze. Having passed a reasonable time, I want to stress again the importance of paying attention to the bugs (there are several of significant importance, and one more has been added since then, eg http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1321 and http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1232 ). And I want to be constructive and I want to support improved TDE (I think that is the best of all *), again I offer my help to fix them, as there are several issues that I can help (those related to translation lacks into Spanish) so I would really like if are enabled channels for the participation of collaborators in fields such as translation (I think it's necessary to ensure the future of TDE).

A set of new sudo-related bugs: * Konsole as SuperUser: T > System > SuperUser > Konsole: a Konsole window appears ask for "[sudo] password for [user]" - it is a Debian (no-sudo) system, therefore neither user password (user is not in /etc/sudoers) neither root password (demand sudo) work. Konqueror as root in the "T > System > SuperUser" dialog works well. http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1228 * In T > System, other applications as KPackage open, but for a action ask for "SUDO password", and again neither user password neither root password work. Synaptic via "Run command" answer "KDEInit could not launch 'su-to-root': could not find 'su-to-root' executable". Some time ago I sent an email to the Trinity-devel list with my experiences installing TDE in Debian Squeeze. Having passed a reasonable time, I want to stress again the importance of paying attention to the bugs (there are several of significant importance, and one more has been added since then,eg http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1321 and http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1232). And I want to be constructive and I want to support improved TDE (I think that is the best of all *), again I offer my help to fix them, as there are several issues that I can help (those related to translation lacks into Spanish) so I would really like if are enabled channels for the participation of collaborators in fields such as translation (I think it's necessary to ensure the future of TDE).
Bugs are bugs. They will be resolved eventually. :) Translations are a different topic.
A serious challenge we have at the moment is we don't have any how-to or guide to help people translate text. There are two primary file types containing translations: po and docbook files. Each file type needs attention.
Another challenge is all original text is written in English. A translator therefore needs a good grasp of English as well as his or her native language. Yet even with that grasp, somebody with a native English background should be available to help or mentor translators to ensure context is translated correctly because not all non-native English speakers will understand context correctly.
Another challenge for anybody trying to update these files is not speaking the other languages. When I update these file types with simple updates, such as converting instances of kde -> tde, I have no way to know whether the changes I make are good or whether I introduced incorrect translations. I have to be very careful when making such changes such that I don't perform a massive global search-and-replace that modifies text within other text strings that should not be changed. I have seen this happen often with other patches.
In the end, somebody native to each language has to review all texts and be willing and able to offer changes. They don't have to offer patches, just text files of what to change. Somebody else can convert the changes to a patch.
To start all of this, we really need a basic guide at the wiki to help translators.

One more issue about i18n packages: can you provide a separate packages and git reposetories for each translation? A monolithic overlay is over 2Gb and release package is over 500M... It's too heavy if you don't need them all...

At the other end of the spectrum, downloading localization files should _not_ be a chore. Packagers should be creating only one package per language.

nope, you can just add a kde-i18n witch contains all languages as submodules.
