I've got the same thoughts sometimes: to port kicker, kdesktop and keramik style to kde4 and there will be no need in trinity. I've even tried to start several times to port kicker and keramik... But all this have gone nowhere...
just for the record: kicker was already more or less ported to Qt4 at the time it got replaced by Plasma. It was in the source code till October 2007 [1], just a few months prior to the 4.0 release. So it would be a good idea starting from this point.
It is indeed not so hard to get this to compile against KDE 4.11 again. I just pushed the mentioned Kicker port to GitHub with some fixes to get it to compile and run against KDE 4.11.
Maybe I'll play a bit more with it when I have time. It would be nice to see how kicker & kdesktop on KDE 4 would work. I don't think it could replace Trinity in every single situation, but I think could be an interesting alternative.
If anyone would like to look more at this, be sure to get in touch.
