Did you try every Phonon backend available ? Except for really bad luck at least one of them should work.
Thanks! No I didn't. No one in #suse suggested it. I don't know what the overall structure of the sound system is. I just switched back to alsa when I installed KDE3, and it works fine. One less pain in my backend. 8^)
