I have lately observed that issue on my Linux Automation platform:

[Debian 10] Pulseaudio doesn't start in the Live due to ALSA problems
FIX => The option "autospawn=no" in
/etc/pulse/client.conf.d/00-disable-autospawn.conf was commented due to it is discouraging
mostly KMix and it doesn't detect PulseAudio at the configuration initialisation. The
first start yet comes without PulseAudio but it is appeared in the installed system after
the rebooting!

THANKS Roman! :-)
I commented it out (as it supposed to be at non-systemd
installations), I rebooted and this time seem to recognize Pulseaudio.
However, it still doesn't work and Kmix indicates it as "muted".
Sliding the bar to the top, doesn't change anything.
