BTW there seems now no graphical interface for administrating users (adding shells, group etc) I can do that from the console, yes, but a GUI is much more convenient. Any suggestions? Some time I used Kuser but that is also gone.

The kuser-trinity package is still available in the repository. I've never used it, so I have no idea if it's working properly.
