P.P.S. *It occurs to me that whether one is
"shiftless" [unmotivated,
lazy] or "shifty" [nervous, acting guilty, moving round too much, no
fixed abode, etc.], both are bad. So is it better to be shifty or
shiftless, or should
one
avoid this word altogether?

You clearly missed the obvious conclusion and, likely, the correct
answer. Science, dear boy, science.
Gnomes, trolls and germlins. Clearly you have an infestation.
Kate
No, that seems unlikely, as I always leave out food and drink for the
blessed
folk, and we have always had a very reciprocal
relationship.
I prefer to believe that the Men in Black are after me. That seems a more
plausible explanation.

True. Sound and sane reasoning.
Kate
It could be, however, that I have somehow offended themselves through my own
ignorance, or because they are known to be whimsical, and even playfully
cruel. Or perhaps I did not notice the beckoning glance of some princess of
the Sidhe, and the lady (forgetting that I could not actually see her) was
offended.
This, too, could explain what happened.
