like kdesktop is deadlocked. Next time it happens can you
break into kdesktop with gdb (gdb --pid `pidof kdesktop`), execute "thread
apply all bt", and post the output?

Forgot to mention that this is only useful if you have the tdebase
debugging symbols installed before launching gdb...on Debian/Ubuntu from
the PPAs you can install tdebase-trinity-dbg.
