On GNU/Linux, I always stuck with Devuan using Sysvinit. It works great with TDE but the
repos are *extremely* slow in the US, at least the southeastern portion where I'm from
(and it doesn't help that my internet is only a megabyte ahead of dialup), so it may
not be the best alternative.
I use FreeBSD now with TDE R14.0.10 so if you want another option this is always viable
(albeit painful for the time being). I plan on writing a tutorial for it one day. Since
you have a low end machine I would stick with the UFS file system since ZFS likes to eat
your memory.
