I think, this should at least be investigated by someone with insight in
the source code before.
The problem is that it is a static data you have once in stations.dat and a
second time in the desktop file. The service is using stations.dat (if I am
not wrong), but the applet is using the desktop file to provide the values
for selecting the stations.
This is what I see in the code (without too much digging)
