Thanks for the tip, Michael. Just did ...
sudo dd if=./q4os-0.5.18-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb
where /dev/sdb was an _unmounted_ usb-stick which now boots fine into
the Q4OS install boot menu. Bugger! This is not a live image! You
cannot "try before you install" so I've just messed up my netbook.
