I've tried that route and had mucho trouble getting them
to install/run under the new libs. So now I stick with what
is in the repos.
I'm not that tech savvy when I comes to compiling and
installing. Plus I worry about wrecking what already works!
So far TDE-Kubunto seems to have what I'm looking for.
And I too want to get away from KDE 4... :-D

To clarify:
1. I run Audacity (installed).
2. I run Kaffeine (installed).
3. I run WINE (installed, obviously ha!)
All three of these programs will work *IF* I install an older
version of each. New versions of apps don't always work better.
WINE 1.6.1 won't run many of my programs. I need 1.4.x
and...
Kaffeine 1.2.2 is a piece of garbage. I need 0.8.
I think you should be able to find the older version(s) of what you
are worried about -- maybe at SourceForge, maybe at a devoted web site.
You may need to compile from source to get them to play nice with
new/updated distro libraries.
For instance, I installed an "older" version of KDE on this
system to get away from KDE 4. :-)
Just my thoughts.
