This is an area of Linux I have not drilled down into. I know it's kdm/tdm not passing the info to somebody that is the issue, but whether the issue is with kdm/tdm itself or one of the dependent libraries and who this is communicated to is a mystery to me. God knows a simple change somewhere to support Wayland could have broken passing the tty info to X. Where and what takes someone familiar with how/where this happens.
