TDE as it was in KDE3 does not read the environment variables from the shell
AFAIR.
I don't know about ~/.trinity/env/ although I have a shell script there from
2015 that sets some keycodes. Unfortunately I do not remember anything
about it :/
Oh, there is another way: you can set environment variables in ~/.xsessionrc - that's
what I use to do dirty startup stuff :)
