Sounds like a Kate session. By default, Kate saves sessions and loads
them on application start. You can change it to always start a new
session on launch under 'Configure Kate... > Application > Sessions'.
You should also select 'Do not save sessions' on the exit behavior on
the same page.
But you cannot save the visibility of the left side panel. This was on the list some weeks
ago :)
