In any event, it would be great if the desktop-base
and
sudo issues could be resolved so that people can migrate
smoothly from Debian Lenny to Squeeze+Trinity.

A smooth upgrade from Debian Lenny to Squeeze+Trinity is probably not
possible. If you don't purge all kde stuff first kaboom will strike.
