If I understood correctly...
click on file type
close konq
relaunch konq and see if the setting remains.
It does. When I relaunch konq, it's still set to sort by file type.

I infer this is because determining the file/mimetype requires
examining the file's contents and the sort function doesn't get called
after that's done.
