Technically you can compile enough of a Linux system with static linking to
make a reasonable rescue platform (Gentoo marks sysvinit, busybox, several
shells, nano, several disk-mounting tools like LVM, and so on, as
static-linkable). It's just that no one does so as part of a standard distribution.
