I doubt anybody has time to work on it, but you can just open a bug with the request and it will be handled.

The bug request is already there (bug 2818) and we have initially decided not to do anything because of:
1) there is already a way to achieve the required functionality if needed, so a user can customize the separator space
to fit his own needs
2) changing this may trigger most of the other users to ask to change this back.
But if several users express their preference for the additional separator, we can make the change, shouldn't be that
big thing.
