I already forgot what you are using ATM. I have setup a domain with mail and I use KMail with IMAP at a server we share with a small community. However it is hard to fight spam, otherwise it is working fine. I was also wondering to either pay for a spam filter tool or for a service. If Fastmail offers spam filtering (I bet they are) it is definitely a point. The other thing that developed in the past 10y or so is DKIM and SPF, so now it is very challenging to operate a SMTP server.
