Actually the problem was that one of the primary servers was offline for
scheduled maintenance; this maintenance ended up taking several times
longer than originally anticipated due to failing hardware (which has
since been replaced).
It appears I need to be looking for a new secondary DNS provider--the
service currently used (twisted4life) is not keeping up with changes to
the DNS standards and is throwing the vast majority of the issues noted
above.
