The clock is telling the time reliably, but the date
disappears when I
reboot or shutdown and start again later. It is easy to persuade it
to return, but this is not my laptop and I need it to Just Work.
Any ideas, please?

Can you send a screenshot of both the panel clock area without the date
and the same area with the date?
