I am 80 years old and retired after a career in Systems programming and consulting, but I am a complete novice when it comes to Linux. I have decided to try Ubuntu 20.04 and as part of the learning process I decided to install the Trinity Desktop Environment.
After struggling through the installation I finally was able to get the installation to run without errors, however, the Desktop does not activate when logging into Ubuntu. Also, Trinity is not listed in the "sessions" list on the log in page.
Is there anyway to check if the installation was completed correctly?
How do I activate the desktop if the installation was correct?
Thank you, Klaus Cook Houston, TX
If the Trinity desktop is already installed, open a shell (or console, or konsole ...), and run sudo dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity. Just in case you are a total n00b, sudo means that you will need root privileges, meaning your password.
For some reason, tdm-trinity does not get activated as your default desktop, if you have other desktops installed (such as Gnome or KDE Plasma, etc.).
This is a problem also in OpenSuSE, which uses update-alternatives to manage the various *dm settings. When I upgraded to 14.0.8-1 tdm disappeared from the list of possible DMs in the login menu. Manual configuration of update-alternatives is difficult to understand, and it would be really nice if the OpenSuSE packager could add a post-installation script to the trinity-tdm RPM package to do this?

I did not like exegnulinux, myself. (Sorry, Nik!) It *seemed* to complete the installation, but I never could get it to boot into the desktop. It would just hang in boot process, and nothing happened. There is also Q4OS (I think that's the name), which is pretty good, but bugged me in a lot of little ways. I would maybe try out AntiX, as you can get that with TDE installed, I seem to recall; it is a small and very fast distro. But I would only recommend it for laptops, not desktops with more than a single internal hard drive.
