don't know if it's fit to purpose but have you tried jmtpfs? it's command-line and unfortunately requires java. works pretty well most times for me.
also I often use something called sshdroid which one gets from 'google play' - uses wifi; you mount the phone's card and access content.
may not be options in your circumstances but maybe worth mentioning in case.
